Please hold…

This whole building process is already taking longer than I anticipated. Fortunately, life has kept me busy so I’m not stressing out about it…yet. We’ve signed the contract and handed over a 10% down payment. The architect (it’s a design/build firm, so they handle everything) sent over an initial set of plans but left out a few big details, and also eliminated the biggest natural light source in our already dark living room. If we acted on the first plan, it would be like living in a cave…also, I’m not a fan of the barn door/pocket door trend, so we had to eliminate those as well.

We’ve sent over some suggestions and are waiting on version 2.0. Meanwhile, we decided not to break our lease, which means we will only have to live through the last few weeks of construction (as opposed to the whole 3-4 month process). This decision will definitely cost us more, but we’re thinking about it as part of the overall cost of the project.  We’ve chosen our internal and external color palette and are prepared to choose other fixtures and fittings soon. Tick tock…

Texan, teacher, writer, reader: that’s me in a nutshell. Originally from Texas, I now live in London with my husband (he’s a Brit) and our two boys. I spend my time devouring books (especially young adult/middle grade fiction), baking cookies and generally going in ten directions at once. More than a decade ago, I moved to London for a teaching job, met my husband, stayed, and started a family. The last few years have been a whirlwind: in 2013, we moved to Austin, TX and I decided to stay at home with our son; in 2014, we bought and renovated a house in South Austin; in 2015, we welcomed our second son at a local birth center...and in 2016, we packed up and moved back to London! 2017 is set to see more changes as our eldest little starts school and I head back to the classroom. Read on for renovation info, book reviews, creative writing posts, and the general flotsam and jetsam of my life.

  1. Hi, Would you mind sharing the name of the design/ build firm that you used? I’m looking to do a similar home addition, and would love to know who did such great work for you : )
